Ridding Yourself of Chapped Lips

If you know that you have a propensity to get chapped lips, it can be a frustrating and even painful condition. After all, if the chapping is severe enough, it can actually cause your lips to split and bleed, which makes everything from eating to smiling painful. Therefore, if you know that you’re predisposed to chapped lips, make sure to avoid some common activities that can increase your likelihood of worsening the condition. With that in mind, stay out of extreme weather such as heavy wind, extreme heat, or extreme cold.

If you are going to be in these conditions, make sure your lips are entirely covered with fabric or at least covered with an effective lip balm. In general, use lip balm on a regular basis as well as sunscreen as sunburned lips are sometimes erroneously called chapped lips. Also make sure that you avoid licking your lips too much. If you do get chapped lips and need chapped lip relief, make sure to continue to follow this advice. Also, hydrate often and avoid smoking, as smoking significantly evaporates your body’s natural oils.

Many people can’t wait until the winter season and all the fun it brings. There are many activities that can only be done when there’s snow. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledding, and inner-tubing are great activities for family fun during the winter. Unfortunately, spending a lot of time outdoors in the winter can often result in chapped lips. Cold weather chapping is caused by environmental conditions that lead to hydration. When dehydration sets in, lips become dry and can crack and peel. The first cold day should serve as a reminder to start using protective lip balm. Lip balm can protect your lips from drying out. Make sure to apply the balm before the chapping begins however, because the protective waxes in lip balm can only protect lips that are not yet damaged. Apply your moisture rich lip balm several times a day for optimal result.

What Causes Chapped Lips?

There’s nothing more painful than having severely chapped lips. Sometimes the condition can become so severe that even smiling can result in painful splits and bleeding. But what exactly causes chapped lips, and how can you avoid this unpleasant condition? Technically, chapped lips are the result of having diminished moisture in your lips. This is pretty much common knowledge, but the more important question is how do you avoid getting these chapped, dry, and irritated lips?

More often than not, chapped lips are caused by overexposure to elements such as extreme cold or wind. If you’ve ever spent an entire afternoon outside on a blustery day, you’ve probably paid the price by reaching for your chapstick in the days to follow. But the good news is that you don’t have to avoid the outside altogether. One of the best preventions is to make sure you don’t excessively lick your lips in cold weather. And if you do start to suffer, use petroleum jelly or other chapstick to relieve your pain.

Don’t Forget the Lips!

SPF lip balmWhen the sun peeks out from behind those clouds, many people’s first reaction is to throw on some shorts and run outside. But the next step should always be reaching for that bottle of suntan lotion. While some people swear up and down that they don’t burn, it’s still a good idea to lather up.

And just because you take the precaution of wearing sunscreen, it doesn’t mean the sun is “bad” for you. The sun, in small doses, is actually quite good for you. Most importantly, it replenishes your body’s vitamin d pool, which has numerous health benefits including better immunity and a healthier balance of calcium and blood pressure.

Just take precautions. Always make sure to lather every part of your skin that will be exposed to sun for extended periods of time. And don’t forget to pack the SPF lip balm. The lips are often forgotten when it comes to one’s sunscreen regimen, and they are easily burned. Use at least SPF 15 on your kisser, and reapply often to keep them safe.
